This week was fairly productive, in spite of the fact that I spent Thursday and Friday blowing my nose and generally feeling miserable. Thursday I took some Benadryl and then ended up taking a two hour nap! I have no idea what the boys did while I was sleeping.

Bible

We finished studying the story of Joseph, completed all the worksheets included in our curriculum and then we read the Joseph story again, but this time it was a book from the library. It stuck to the biblical version and the illustrations were fantastic!!

Math

Noodle continued with lessons from Teaching Textbooks 3, and he started working on a curriculum we are reviewing for The Old Schoolhouse Blog Crew.  More on that in February, but so far it is going along great with Teaching Textbooks.  Additionally, Noodle did some flash card practice for addition, subtraction and multiplication facts. I found some Math Mammoth PDF files in my computer, so we worked on a couple of Multiplication pages too.

Spelling

This week's Rod and Staff lesson covered common spellings of the /ou/ and /oi/ sounds.

Phonics and Misc Language Arts

Noodle completed several more pages in his Explode the Code Book 5. I ordered a new version of Rory's Story Cubes - Action Words. Noodle had several giggles making up some silly stories.

Reading and Literature

We continued to listen to James and the Giant Peach, our current literature unit. We did a couple of fun activities, which I will write about in our Lit Unit post, coming the end of next week. For free reading Noodle continued to read Busy Times and the Magic Tree House Book 4 Pirates Past Noon.

Latin

We are making our way towards the end of Song School Latin.  Prima Latina is patiently waiting on our shelf to be used!  We also started another language program from Classical Academic Press which we are reviewing - more on that in February too!  This week's Latin lessons centered around  Food. It had been a while since we played Latin Monkey Match, so we broke that out this week to have a little fun.

Science

We finished the unit on Stars and Galaxies from Apologia Astronomy. Bear helped us with a quick activity to show how the universe is expanding. Also, Noodle learned to identify some constellations and he learned about Black Holes and Supernovas. It's all very cool stuff and shows just how amazing God's creation really is!

Geography

The only geography we did this week was the state flash cards and review of People and Places to know.

All the flash cards/memory work we worked on this week.

History

We are getting deeper in to our study of the Civil War.  It is such a sad time in history and I really want to make sure he understands that, but I don't want it to be too deep and heavy that he isn't enjoying learning about it.  He is really enjoying the Veritas Press Lessons about Abraham Lincoln.

One of our Tapestry of Grace reading selections was Thunder at Gettysburg.  Grandma read that to him this week and then he narrated his answers to her for the Literature worksheet that goes with the book.

High School - Bear

I have been writing less about Bear because he doesn't care for me taking too many pictures of him, or talking about him too much.  I have permission to share today!

This week he started the new semester at the Community College. He is taking English Composition.  He was also going to take History, but after attending the first class and meeting the professor, he decided he would rather do history at home.  The Professor READ STRAIGHT from the textbook to the students, never interjected his own words, and didn't let them ask any questions.  So, that was that. He would prefer to keep reading history books, writing essays and doing the History Scholar pages at home, and take college history when he gets to a University.

Bear continued with Russian, SAT Vocab Videos, Algebra 2, American Govt, Grammar and Art of Poetry. Also, he attended his Chemistry class and is about to take the midterm exam.

I think I have heard about Story Cubes before. I will look into those for next year. I just love the pictures of older brother and younger brother learning together. Mary on the topic of the Civil War boy, can I relate. I think I only want to teach everything on a high school level and that certainly would not be appropriate for a second grader. Feels like I'm constantly pulling back. Looks like a great week. Hope your feeling better.

I love to hear Joseph's story!!

Way to go Noodle working on multiplication! Those aren't easy to memorize:) To get mine to be able to memorize them all they finally had to write the tables over and over.

It just makes my heart smile when I see older siblings helping their younger siblings with their work. Great photo of them together too!

Bear is doing some incredible work! Good for him to recognize some teaching styles just don't go well with the student's style of learning. Kudos to you for him to know that he can learn it at home, what a blessed option he has!!

I love reading your wrap-ups. Thank you for sharing,

Hey, Mary. You asked about the show Once Upon a Time, I do believe the first season is available on Netflix streaming if you have it. We've followed it online since it started, and it's REALLY good. You should def give it a try and see what you think!

Chasing Lincoln's Killer was a really good book. I learned a lot that I didn't already know! It was actually one of my favorite reads from last year.
