Marshall Publishing George Washington Carver- TOS Review

Marshall Publishing produces family friendly media and are best known for their "As Seen On TV" videos like, Lots and Lots of Trains and Lots and Lots of Fire Trucks.

For review I received George Washington Carver: His Life and His Work.  It is an educational DVD and the true story of the life and accomplishments of George Washington Carver.  It is about 30 minutes and I must say it is very informative, not to mention inspirational!  I didn't see that this product was promoted for any specific age range, but even Noodle (age 7) sat through it.  There is a Study Guide that goes with the DVD - when you click on the link, scroll all the way to the bottom to view the study guide/discussion questions.

I don't remember when I first heard about George Washington Carver, but I did know that he was responsible for the peanut.  Maybe it is my age, but when I see peanuts, two men always come to mind George Washington Carver, the scientist and Jimmy Carter, the former President.  I am ashamed to say I did not know/or remember how many other things George Washington Carver had a hand in.

This wonderful documentary/biography was filmed at the George Washington Carver Museum at the Tuskegee Institute.  I did have a bit of nostalgia because this program reminded me of the films I used to watch when I was in grade school.  The DVD was beautifully organized, included some great nature scenes (appropriate for a guy whose life work centered on plants) and held our interest. 

This DVD would make a great addition to any U.S. History or science study.  It is a brief enough, yet meaty enough presentation to allow older children the opportunity to practice doing a formal outline or practice taking notes.  In fact, I had Bear watch it a second time specifically to practice note taking.  It just so happens that is his current TOG writing assignment - note taking.  Perfect timing!
